What is being done already to support
the Fraser-Hickson Library?

Friends and members of the Fraser-Hickson have rallied to support the Library in a variety of ways:

• Volunteers: a dedicated group of men and women help provide essential services ranging from re-shelving books to transporting reading materials to shut-ins or visually impaired clients.

• Special Gifts: previous donations have included a $7,500 gift from G. Gordon Symons to be used to buy sports and children’s literature, and two gifts of $25,000 each from the Molson Family Foundation Book Fund to buy reference materials.

• Bequests: apart from the original bequests from Hugh Fraser and Dr. J.W.A. Hickson, the Library has received bequests from other benefactors, including Elizabeth Jones, Mona Adilman and, most recently, former Chief Librarian Margery Trenholme.

PLANNED GIVING:

The Fraser-Hickson Library's tradition of private individuals giving generously through bequests began with Hugh Fraser in 1870.

Eighty-six years later a second will - that of Montreal professor J.W.A. Hickson - bequeathed another extraordinary legacy to the Library.

THE FRASER-HICKSON TAKES CARE AND PRIDE IN ACKNOWLEDGING AND SHOWING ITS APPRECIATION FOR EVERY DONATION REGARDLESS OF SIZE

Margery Trenholme, a former Chief Librarian, provided generously for the Library in her will. A pioneer in library technology and administration, she guided the transition of the Fraser-Hickson to a lending library with expanded programs, so important for communities at this time.

As well as these three exceptional gifts, bequests and other charitable contributions of all sizes have been and continue to be gratefully received. They play a vital role in the everyday functioning of the Library. When added to the original endowment, this generosity helps keep the Library efficient in its day-to-day operations and acquisitions. It also permits Fraser-Hickson a greater flexibility to meet the demands of longer range planning in an ever-changing world.

The generosity of donors is even more important to the Library in an era in which government support for education is not consistent.  Planned giving will assist in upgrading and increasing the fiction and non-fiction collections - the heart of the Library's operation. It will also enhance the Fraser-Hickson's vital reference and research services. A greater number of the younger generation need and are benefiting from the services of the Fraser-Hickson. Planned giving can provide more books and increase technological support for children and teenagers. But not only for the young - the Library is an outstanding source of knowledge and information for people of all ages. Bequests made in a general way, or with a specific designation, are always gratefully welcomed. Planned gifts not only strengthen the original endowment of Hugh Fraser - they sustain his dream,  "the diffusion of knowledge by affording free access to all desiring it."

HOW DOES A PLANNED GIFT WORK:  IS THERE ANY FINANCIAL BENEFIT TO THE DONOR WHO MAKES ONE?

A planned gift is a charitable donation arranged during a donor's lifetime but not available to the Library until some time in the future. The most common form of planned giving is a bequest, but there are other possibilities. We can help you plan.

A bequest to the Fraser-Hickson Library may serve to reduce, by means of a tax credit, the income tax payable by the donor's estate. A planned gift may also eliminate or reduce tax on capital gains when appreciated property is given.

The Future

Interest from the Fraser-Hickson endowment no longer keeps pace with the cost of operations. Because this unique institution depends mainly on its endowment and on the efforts of its members and friends, it is greatly exposed.

A special fund-raising initiative, called the Next Chapter Campaign was recently undertaken to ensure a healthy future for the Library. Only with such fund-raisers is it possible for this remarkable community resource to be as open, as unrestricted, as effective, and as essential to a vibrant community as its founders envisaged. The future of the Fraser-Hickson Library depends on all of us.

Many of the programs and services offered by the Library would not be possible without the generous support of our volunteers. In 2002, over 90 volunteers contributed almost 9,100 hours for various tasks at the Library. This time is equivalent to five full-time jobs or approximately $92,000.

Thanks to all our volunteers!
